Relationships

Working with couples or individuals who are struggling in a relationship is extremely meaningful to me since I believe our worlds are shaped by the people in them. We have all found ourselves struggling in relationships because maintaining a healthy one is hard work. Therapy can help you work through the difficulties and find new ways of connecting and communicating. Preserving relationships of any type requires effort that we may be unfamiliar with. Our work together will help you develop skills and tools to enhance your relationships.

I use techniques developed by Dr. Sue Johnson the founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, The Gottman Method by Dr. John Gottman, and an emphasis in closeness and connectedness. Attachment Theory guides much of my thinking when it comes to the connections we make with others. I will work to help you understand your attachment style, how it impacts your relationships, and what skills you may need to help create more secure attachments.

College and Graduate Students

I chose to dedicate the first 15 years of my career to college and graduate students. I fell in love with this population and the many challenges they face. Transitions, self-discovery, identity formation, relationships, success/failure avoidance, frustration tolerance, imposter syndrome, and embracing imperfection are all recurring themes I’ve explored with this group.

Therapeutic Approach

I approach therapy as I would any relationship, with openness, curiosity, respect, empathy, and passion. My theoretic orientation is Psychodynamic which means that I will try to help you discover from your past why your present is. My goals will be to guide you through your forest and help you find your path. My approach is you focused. I will meet you where you are and encourage new ways of thinking about and approaching patterns that you have either noticed or been unaware of in your life. Using the ideas of insight, resilience, empowerment, and acceptance our work will help deepen your understanding of the self and of others.
